While
Joy Episalla's previous body of work was also focused on the evidence
of human interaction with the physical (domestic) environment,
this new work looks more closely at the evidence of loss manifested
through personal belongings things abandoned and removed,
and the traces left behind. Episalla includes photographs of towels
left to dry, a wellworn mattress and nowblank walls
from which pictures have been removed.

In her most
recent work, Joy Episalla continues to push the boundaries of photography
into the arena of sculpture, mounting the photographs on thick Plexiglas,
often intending the work to simply lean against the wall. This exhibition
features a digital photographic installation called "Portrait
of FM" a largerthanlife sized image of a friend's
bookcase left intact after his death. The seven by twelve foot scrim
hangs in front of the gallery windows, with the Boston cityscape visible
beyond. |
