The Clifford-Smith Gallery is pleased to present the photographs of Henry Horenstein from the recently published Canine, an 80-page book of duotone prints. In Canine, Horenstein sheds new light on man's best friend with this series of abstracted photographs of dogs. Henry Horenstein is a well-known photographer and a professor of photography at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. He has produced dozens of books ranging from fine-art monographs to widely used academic texts such as the now classic Black & White Photography -- A Basic Manual, as well as several books for children. For his published collections of images like Canine, Creatures, and A is for...? A Photographer's Alphabet of Animals, he visited zoos, aquariums and natural habitats all over the world

Horenstein, "like photographers from Weston to Mapplethorpe, makes quasi abstractions out of living forms," wrote The Boston Globe. Horenstein has been a visiting artist and conducted workshops extensively and his work has been shown widely in museums and galleries. For the full run of the show, the artist and the gallery are donating 20% of sales to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA).

canines on canine

a dog party to benefit the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals / Angell Memorial Animal Hospital

Event Date: Thursday, June 7, 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Continuing in their tradition of combining adventurous artwork with causes that inspire us all, Clifford-Smith Gallery is pleased to join with Henry Horenstein in tossing (as in a frisbee) a party for dogs and dog lovers, Canines on Canine, to benefit the MSPCA. Dogs and human guests at the June 7 party will enjoy snacks and beverages as well as an opportunity to meet and greet with our distinguished host committee of 50 dogs, chaired by the well-known Clifford-Smith Gallery dog, Lucy.

Admission to the party will be $20 for people (dogs are free), and includes an entry to the raffle of dog products and services to be drawn at the end of the show's run. The book Canine will be on sale and Horenstein will be on hand to autograph copies for an additional donation to the MSPCA. The artist has also generously donated three photo shoots, maybe with your lucky dog, each to be paired with the purchase of a photograph from the show. The location and the shots for the photo sessions will be of the artist's choosing, consistent with the look and feel of the photos in the book, as will the resulting 20" x 24" print for the purchaser.
